چکیده

The present study has examined the similarity and the mutual intelligibility between Amharic and two Tigrigna varities using three tools; namely Levenshtein distance, intelligibility test and questionnaires. The study has shown that both Tigrigna varieties have almost equal phonetic and lexical distances from Amharic. The study also indicated that Amharic speakers understand less than 50% of the two varieties. Furthermore, the study showed that Amharic speakers are more positive about the Ethiopian Tigrigna variety than the Eritrean variety. However, their attitude towards the two varieties does not have an impact on their intelligibility. The Amharic speakers’ familiarity to the Tigrigna varieties seems largely dependent on the genealogical relation between Amharic and the two Tigrigna varieties.

Linguistic distance as a determinant of the mutual intelligibility between Netherlandic and Belgian Dutch language varieties

Research on the mutual intelligibility of closely related Germanic languages has shown that several linguistic and extra-linguistic factors determine intelligibility scores to a high degree. In this paper, we aim to pinpoint the precise role of the determinant phonetic distance. As for example Gooskens (2007) shows, aggregate Levenshtein distances turn out to be good predictors of the intelligi...

Mutual intelligibility of Chinese dialects: Predicting cross-dialect word intelligibility from lexical and phonological similarity

This paper aims to predict mutual intelligibility (defined here as cross-dialectal word recognition) between 15 Chinese dialects from lexical and phonological distance measures. Distances were measured on the stimulus materials used in the experiment. Their predictive power was compared with earlier similar distance measures based on large word lists. Predictors based on just the stimulus mater...

Methods for Measuring Intelligibility of Closely Related Language Varieties

Introduction The exact number of known living languages varies from 5,000 to 10,000, depending on one's definition of 'language'. An even larger number of dialects are spoken worldwide. Many of these languages and dialects (from now on taken together as 'languages' or 'varieties') are so similar that they are mutually intelligible to varying degrees, even without prior contact or formal instruc...

Counting Languages in Dialect Continua Using the Criterion of Mutual Intelligibility

This paper shows how it is possible to count languages vs. dialects if, for every pair of varieties, we are given whether they are mutually intelligible or not. The method is to divide the varieties into a minimum number of internally mutually intelligible groups. In terms of graphs (as in discrete mathematics), the method is even easier understood as: applying graph-coloring to a graph over va...

On the Romance Languages Mutual Intelligibility

We propose a method for computing the similarity of natural languages and for clustering them based on their lexical similarity. Our study provides evidence to be used in the investigation of the written intelligibility, i.e., the ability of people writing in different languages to understand one another without prior knowledge of foreign languages. We account for etymons and cognates, we quant...
